A total of eleven boats competed in Tynemouth Sailing Club's Tate Trophy for National Twelves on Sunday 12th November 2000. The racing was held at Newburn Slipway, the winter quarters of Tynemouth Sailing Club and was to be the last scheduled Twelve open meeting before Christmas & the last in the Northern Area Old Spice Series. Whilst some people had travelled from flooded regions such as the Midlands & Yorkshire, it was ironic that competitors had to wait for the tide to come in to permit launching. After short tacking up the northern bank of the Tyne, Philip David and Jon Whitehead were the first two boats to the windward mark. They extended their lead as the race progressed and the wind strength increased. Most place changes in the main pack took place on the beats. David, crewed by Yvonne McInnes, took 1st place from Whitehead, crewed by his daughter, with Brian Herring & Ros Steavenson in 3rd. The fleet stayed afloat & waited to sail the second race whilst the wind freshened further. Whitehead was the first to capsize on the run down from the windward mark, letting David capitalize his lead over the following pack. A violent squall passed through the fleet on the run capsizing Rob Storrar, Bernard Clark and Howard Chadwick, allowing Peter Miatt & Sue Jones into 2nd & 3rd place respectively. A bad tack on the next beat by Miatt let Jones through into 2nd place &, after filling up twice, Miatt was overhauled by Clark. Philip David was the winner of both the Tate Trophy & the Old Spice Trophy.
