National 12s
at Salcolme Open Meeting
Sponsored by local Solicitors, Bartons,
the highly competitive fleet of 17 National Twelves enjoyed an
afternoon start ensuring that the sea breeze filled in almost
on cue every day to give ideal sailing conditions.
With a strong ebb tide and a Black
Flag to catch the unwary. Will Henderson crewed by son Robert
started off the week with a win , and were followed home by David
and Rosemary Croft in second place with John Murrell and Nicola
Bass third.
With a very light breeze on Monday
the fleet were sent out to '0' mark off North Sands and on the
run back through the Bag the leaders had sailed through the Lasers
who started in front, only to be caught by the Yawl and Solo fleets
who were sailing a shorter course! As the raft of 100 plus boats
drifted through a windless Bag and on up to Gerston everyone in
the fleet took turns to lead but eventually the Crofts pulled
clear, escaping the melee at Gerston to win from the Hendersons,
with Graham and Tamar Cranford-Smith third.

With the wind coming back to play
on Tuesday, the Hendersons notched up another first from the
Crofts, with Tom and Abigail Hayhoe finishing third.
Wednesday's race took the fleet
to all the points of the estuary, with the wind blowing a 3 -
4. The run from Blackstone brought the first casualties when
the leaders, dodging the last of the tide on the Portlemouth
shore, ran into a running line and those with fixed rudders all
came to a premature stop followed by an in-voluntary swim leaving
the boats coming up behind with nowhere to go! Jon and Charlotte
Ibbotson, sailing for the first time in the week avoided the
mayhem and pulled out an unassailable lead over the Hendersons
with John and Mandy Thornton finishing third. |

With the Estuary bathed in sunshine
and with a good breeze Thursday's race was another estuary tour
with a rare visit to Bowcombe included, the reach back from which
was fast. The Ibbotsons again won from the Hendersons with the
Thorntons again third.
With Henderson having won the week,
Friday's race still left all to play for through out the rest
of the fleet. Again a tour via Blackstone, where a family of
Dolphins joined in, Frogmore and Bowcombe saw Henderson again
in front of the Ibbotsons with the Crofts third. |
