First Lady Winner of Tynemouth Bailer

Sue Jones, crewed by Jonathon Garfitt, displayed superior off-wind speed to win this year's Tynemouth Bailer. Sue, from Nottingham Sailing Club, won three of the four races and was the first lady winner of the trophy, which has been raced for many years. The event was held over the weekend 17th/18th June and the races were held in Tynemouth North Bay. Saturday's race was held in a blustery force 4, and many competitors retired. Sue Jones rapidly picked her way to the front and battled for first place with Brian Miatt (Yorkshire Ouse Sailing Club). An error by Miatt let Jones through to first place, which she held to the end of the race.

Sunday heralded lighter winds and more sunshine. Philip David (Yorkshire Ouse Sailing Club) was over the line for the start of the first race, Sue Jones capitalized on this error to take an early lead, with Brian Miatt in second place. Whilst some of the fleet sought wind out to sea, the inshore route evading the current proved advantageous. Brian Miatt dropped a place to son Peter (Tynemouth Sailing Club) and little place changing ensued.

The second Sunday race saw Sue Jones dominate the race from the start, with Bernard Clark (Yorkshire Ouse Sailing Club) chasing in second place. As the tide changed, Neville Green (Tynemouth Sailing Club), virtually unnoticed by the rest of the fleet, stood out to sea on the final leg and moved from seventh to third place. Sunday's last race was held in a dying wind and a large swell and was eventually taken by Philip David, Neville Green in second and Brian Miatt in third.
