Phil clearly doesn't have enough to keep himself occupied at the moment!

My much anticipated and soon to be revealled Numinous has tracks, I can get 400mm of travel by pulling 800mm of rope - so in my view tracks are the way to go.

I think this illustrates one of the great joys in owning a 12, in that you can set things up just the way you like!

At Spinnaker we use 1092, 1104 & 1145 for DB, AC & Vintage respectively. It seems to work well, different boats do well in different conditions, but in the final analysis it is largely down to the crew.  Either way, with double bottomed, admirals cup or vintage you are joining a class that youngsters will enjoy, especially if you have a good crowd of youngsters amongst the 12's already and before too long will be leaving you ashore!

P.S. Sound advice Antony, who says we 12 sailors never agree on anything!

Hold onto your keyboards, the little travelled Spinnaker Fleet are set for a weekend at the seaside!

Tim, please could we reserve two rooms, an eight and a six bed (4&5 or 5&6)?

Many thanks, Ian

Boats / Re: N3404 Squirt

A quick pit stop (although rather too much spraybooth for the job I think) for a polish and revarnish before the long journey to a new home, all the way back to Spinnaker!

N3404 is now owned by Geoff and Emily Fardell, we hope you have lots of fun.

Right, that's the ballast sorted - now she's up to weight I just need to figure out how to bond it all in!

Quote from: 120Us too. We had a great day trial sailing Dead Cat Bounce on Sunday on the IOW in sunshine and plenty of breeze against Jo in Bouncer. The boat was very well behaved and planed upwind through the Solent chop8). The winged rudder and trim tab centreboard kept the crew busy (Zoe's growing two extra arms!). We discussed bringing DCB over to the 'north island' so other people could have a go, please get in touch if you're interested.

Might be too short notice, but we have a "Try a 12" day at Spinnaker on 12th July. I am sure DCB would create a lot of interest!

We can help with the logistics of getting the boat transported ...

A great turnout, 17 boats lining up for Sunday's racing made quite a spectacle on the lake.

A big thank you to all those who made the effort to travel and to all who contributed to a great weekend, with a special thank you to Graham and Zoe for the coaching session on Saturday.

Full report and results to follow shortly.

Thanks Everyone, looks like a good weekend.....  a few last minute details on the various aspects of the weekend.

Coaching - Saturday 20th
This will be led by Graham C, rigged and ready by 10:00. We will have caterers on site for lunch so no need to bring butties.

12's Barbeque - Saturday 20th
Following on from the days sailing with food from around 7:00, the barbeque will be prepared by our resident caterers and the bar will be open so bring your drinking boots!  Even if you cannot make the coaching session you are all very welcome to join in for the evening. Approximate cost will be £7.00 per head.
If you have any special dietary needs please let me know (n12s(at)spinnakerclub.co.uk)

Open Meeting - Sunday 21st
Counting as part of the Thames Area Series our Open Meeting this year is integrated into our regular club racing. Registration from 10:00 onwards, briefing at 11:00 and the first race shortly before 12:00. We generally have about 30 toppers and the same number of oppies out on a Sunday morning so the car parks will be busy (don't worry they don't all stay for the racing!!), we will cordon off some of the car park as a dinghy park for visitors, please just make yourself known on arrival. Once again our caterers will be providing food, bacon butties in the morning and lunch between races 1 & 2.

Directions to the club can be found at www.spinnakerclub.co.uk/location.html
and SI's at www.spinnakerclub.co.uk/Sailing%20Instructions%202009.pdf

If there is anything else you need please do shout!

Looking forward to seeing you all there.

Oh well, here goes.....

Our recent success with the growth of the 12 fleet at Spinnaker has been due in no small part to the influx of youth sailors moving up through Oppies and Toppers into a class visibly catering for the younger club membership. We have several helm and crew partnerships at college or university and a number of school age youngsters regularly crewing for Mum or Dad.

To suggest that taking time out during exam time is not a problem is naive in the extreme and the fact iremains that a large proportion of our 12 fleet were prevented from attending this year's event.

A future championship event held during the summer term will inevitably exclude a large proportion of our number, this may not be the case at other clubs but how many can boast a fleet in excess of 15 Twelves - and growing?

The arguments for avoiding an expensive (both in terms of cash and annual leave) week in August are sound, but in planning future events can we please consider the youngsters amongst our number - they are after all the key to our future success as a class!

Quote from: 595Will there be scope in the training day to look at rig set up?   I have started to have a proper look at the Crusader now and guess what happens when rig tension comes on.... The mast bends forward.  Is this called post-bend??:o;)
I have some spreader dimensions and i'll try those out tomorrow.  However, we also noted that the mast was very upright.  I have the base at 2500mm from the transom - does this sound right?

Hi Phil
We should have plenty of time to look at rig set up, I would suggest there are a couple of things to check first...  1) Check the mast is straight and 2) that it is sitting on the aft end of the tenon, this puts the rear wall of the section into compression when rig tension is applied, result - no more post bend.

Spinnaker would be delighted to host the event.

Why don't you all come for a test run on the 20-21st of June - See link from events section for details

My daughter struggles similarly. We have the usual ratchet block on the track down in the bottom of the boat but then lead the sheet up trough a turning block let into the side deck just aft of the shrouds and so to a harken cleat on a block fitted to the inside of the deck coaming.  Have a look at the action shot on 3404, you can see the block and cleat just forward of my hand!
