Just seen her picture on Dan Snow's 'Dig WW" where she rescued US airmen from a B17 that crash landed on Loch Neagh in Northern Ireland.
The story 'On Saturday morning, 12 September 1942, Mrs Nellie Benson, wife of Reverend Richard Benson, and her nineteen-year-old daughter, Elisabeth were preparing to go sailing in their Uffa Fox design 12ft dinghy, Redwing. The dinghy had a 21ft mast, a racing centreboard and was well rigged. Mrs Benson, who was in her late fifties, was an excellent helmswoman. Elisabeth was also an excellent sailor and both ladies were looking forward to a pleasant day's sailing in Lough Foyle. It was a lovely end of summer's day with a light breeze blowing from the south and Elisabeth, who had recently come back from boarding school, was bending to check one of the pulleys when her mother's gasp drew her attention.
Looking in the direction her mother was pointing, Elisabeth was just in time to see a great B-17 bomber plane slap onto the surface of the choppy water. Quickly the two women launched the Redwing, and shortly they were emerging from the harbour only to find that the plane was sinking fast. Out on the far side of the lough they could see a small yellow inflatable with four men in it. Nellie Benson, who had a heart condition and should not really have been put in that position, nonetheless judged the tide exactly right. Crossing at an angle, and despite the fact it was quite a difficult manoeuvre against a 7-knot out-going tide, the two plucky women sailed towards the inflatable. When they came sideways alongside it, Elisabeth made it fast to the port side with the bow painter.

We have decided to cancel the Open and Training days next Saturday and Sunday, 11th and 12th June.
The main reason is down to all our regular crews being in the thick of exams.
We have decided to cancel rather than disappoint club members and visitors alike with a complete lack of competitors.
Next years dates will be given more consideration to ensure we have all our boats and crews available.
Sorry if you were planning to come, we promise we will make next year special, we might even get the long awaited call to run a Gill meeting!
Regards

Thursday 21st April will see brothers-in-law Simon Walworth and Tony Flanaghan cycle through nineteen counties of England, stopping off at nineteen cathedrals on the way. The ride is approximately 1200km total and quite challenging for two amateur cyclists!
Why nineteen and why cycling? Well, that is the age Simon’s son Rory died while out off roading on his mountain bike. Why cycling? Well, we believe you will support two 55+ year old men taking on such a big challenge.
The ride is to raise funds for the charity Wheels4life.org run by Hans Rey, one of Rory’s heroes. Wheels4life provide free bikes to individuals in third world countries enabling them to get to work, school in primitive areas where the gift of a bike can change lives. For details of the charity go to www.Wheels4life.org.
Their circular route from Salisbury Cathedral will take them as far west as Exeter, north to Lichfield and with Canterbury at its most easterly point, covering around 1200 km of English country lanes and city streets in nine days.

As we are supporting a USA charity, it is not possible to use ‘Just Giving’ so we are relying on your wish to either send a cheque payable to ‘Rory Walworth Memorial Fund’ or transfer funds electronically, the account sort code is 30-97-41 and account number 33123760.
Alternatively, you can donate via FirstGiving, the USA version of JustGiving.
Go to http://www.firstgiving.com/13639 register and make a donation, please leave a message so we can acknowledge your donation.

The Spinnaker boats are planning to go to Swanage for their regatta on 8th August 2010.
We had a good enough turn out last year to get our own start and trophy, it was windy and great fun for those on the water.
Swanage are a great bunch and the racing is always well run and good fun, the 12's go really well and those who enjoy sea sailing will find the bay a lovely venue (like Weymouth without a two hour sail to the start!).
Put it on your calender, Spinnaker will be there to meet you.

General National 12 chat / mast rake
27 Mar 2010, 09:51
Having spotted this on ebay while looking at 2966, I would like to know if this is the recommended mast rake for them what wants to be a the front of the fleet

A well known Spinnaker helm was arrested last weekend wearing a dress in a public place.
The sailing committee has suspended his membership while he sorts himself out.
How has he sunk to this level? we feel desparately sorry for his poor wife and children.
All of us at Spinnaker hope he gets well soon.

The arrival of Jeremy's new Foolish and the long awaited arrival of Ian's new boat has had Phil Brown reaching for the cheque book in a desperate attempt to maintain his position near the front end of the fleet.
What to do? My gut feeling is to keep Jammy Dodger as she is still the one to beat even with the Chapter hull at a disadvantage on the lake, especially in light airs. Before I had a problem at Swanage regatta none of the Spinnaker boats could live with her so with Weymouth coming should I keep her or move on? The new Angel mast is awesome and performance has really improved, but me thinks I'll struggle against these lake specials.
Is it time for a different boat or should I just work on improving our inland perfomance?
Suggestions please...
ps. Graham, what would you do? Is your boat coming to market?

We have five/six of the Spinnaker 12's going to Swanage regatta this weekend, 1st and 2nd August. Weather forecast looking pretty good for both days. Laid back, well organised event with 2 races at day in the bay. If we get enough boats there I am sure we will get our own start. Fancy coming? contact Ian Stables or me (Simon Walworth) through the forum or by telephone (in the N12 book). Lots of Spinnaker members travelling and planning to stay at California Campsite http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=7923 so come and join us all.

Spotted in the same way those journos find new cars in the oddest places, I saw this new boat taking shape in one of our leading UK yards n the South Coast. Lines by Bim, construction by Ian S, she is simply awesome. Completion date sometime soon, can't wait to see her finished. Hopefully she will be decorated in the same tasteless way some other Spinnaker boats are currently to be found!

Emily and my Rosie (age 14 and 15) show us all how to go swmming with style and a deafening amount of noise during the Spinnaker junior regatta last weekend. Three 12's turned out and all had a great time with the Bryn and Jack showing a clean pair of heels (LOL) in Steve Adsheads 12 with Emily and Iona in Emily's new boat.

On the subject of sea sailing and great venues, the Spinnaker 12's are planning to go to Swanage regatta on 1st and 2nd August. Great sailing, well organised and a really friendly bunch at Swanage Sailing Club. We all plan to camp locally where we can light fires, barbeque and relax away from the chavs normally in abundance at this time of year. Cheap weekend and lots of sailing. If enough 12's attend we will get own start and own cup.

Here goes, but head above the parapet time.
I am really pleased 80 boats could make it, but that 80 could have been a hell of a lot more if Burton Week had been at a more 'student friendly' time.
None of our Student members (Spinnaker) could get to Burton Week this year as they had exams. For one of our sages to tell them to plan their revision so they could get away was crass. I can assure you Thomas for one couldn't and I know Felix, James and Elli were also not possible.
Next May my crew (daughter Rosie), Thomas (son with own 12) and our medical students will not be able to attend a meeting that weekend, so effectively that excludes 3 boats from the event. If I do Burton week, I want my regular crew with me, at least Rosie and I can suffer together, I do not want a scratch rew at a National Championships.
So please could we think it out before booking Weymouth, I for one want to be there.

[face=Arial]Hi Christian[/face][face=Arial]I have a major problem on the 6th March as a Dutch client has booked to see a boat we have for sale in Hamble and I am the only person who can do the viewing.[/face][face=Arial]I am unlikely to get away before 1830 in the evening as I have to deliver him back to Southampton airport. This means the eariest I can get to Ranelagh will be 2000 or so traffic dependent, too late me thinks.[/face][face=Arial]I am very sorry to let people down, but we are a small business and the business has to come first, especially at the moment![/face][face=Arial]If things change I will advise immediately, but it looks unlikely he will change the arrangements.[/face][face=Arial]Regards[/face][face=Arial]Simon[/face]
