General National 12 chat / Ripon open
07 Oct 2019, 12:33

Thanks to everyone involved with putting on the open at Ripon S.C. on Saturday.
Needless to say, the welcome was as friendly as ever.
We had a great time and enjoyed the tricky sailing conditions!

It's some years since I last visited and I was impressed with the improvements that have been made to the clubhouse.  I hope to be back again next year.

Does anyone know of one with an owner who has grown too big for it and might be looking to sell?

Only one month until one of my favourite events of the year takes place on Saturday 30th January. This year it does not form part of the Sailjuice series so will probably be all the better for that! If you are thinking of participating then please be aware that entries have to be made on-line by 28th January at http://stevenicholsontrophy.co.uk/index.asp?selection=Enter%20Online&subsel=24 and may close early if the entry limit of only 120 boats is reached.

See you there?

General National 12 chat / Great Result
24 Feb 2013, 10:22
Congratulations to Jon Ibbotson and Charlotte Stewart for their win in the double handed fleet at the Steve Nicholson Trophy. They sailed extremely well, and consistently, in both races to return a 4th followed by a 3rd to win the 53 boat fleet by one point.

Great result for them and the class! :)

As some of you will be aware, I am part of a team intending to row across the English Channel in the next few days when the weather settles down. If conditions are right, we are also hoping to beat the current record of 2 hours 40 minutes. Why? You might well ask!

It's all for charity: The AHOY Centre, which is based in east London, provides water based activities for young and disabled people in of Britain's most deprived areas. In particular it does a lot of work with young offenders and those who are not in education, giving them some structure to their lives, often for the first time, regularly leading to RYA qualifications and similar. For more details see www.ahoy.org.uk.

Anyone wishing to sponsor us is very welcome to do so and the JustGiving site is: www.justgiving.com/xchannelrowing.

Thank you, and apologies for having to miss RHYC to do this.

Takes place this weekend - see www.greatriverrace.co.uk for details, should be a great family day out. As all those who I caught at NWNW know, I am doing it with some colleagues from work and we hope to complete the 22 mile course in under 4 hours. Anyone who hasn't sponsored us yet, or feels guilty for not comitting enough first time, can do so on www.justgiving.com/Chaucer-Syndicates . It's all in a good cause helping the disadvantaged and disabled get on the water by giving them the opportunity and teaching the skills required to sail, row and handle powered craft.

Are attached.
The Sunday and Monday of Burton Week are the dates for the Southend Festival of the Air 2009 (www.southendairshow.com), which is expected to attract half a million people to the sea-front on the far side of the pier. As a result there will be various road closures and restrictions in force. Whilst these are not expected to generally have a material effect on congestion on Friday and Saturday it will almost certainly pay to avoid the sea-front west of the pier and roads close by, particularly the A13 east of Benfleet, at all times. For this reason, you might find the following routes differ from your sat-nav or other guide.
IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO TRAVEL TO THE CLUB FROM OUTSIDE THE TOWN ON SUNDAY OR MONDAY, YOU SHOULD CONSIDER ALLOWING CONSIDERABLE ADDITIONAL TIME WHICHEVER ROUTE YOU TAKE

Please see the attached summary (there will be more) of catering being provided for Burton Week(end). All I can say is that the full breakfast regularly available is huge, you might need to share it.

Who else is coming out to play and get in some salt water practice at Hamble this weekend with with Jane & I and Jonno & Linz? Can we expect a bumper turnout from Spinnaker? It is only just down the road from there.

I understand some people are finding that some of the accommodation listed on the BW web-site is now full, so I have put together the additional list attached. I have no idea of availability, but with the air-show on I recommend everyone gets booked in quickly.

If you would like a brand new jib, kindly donated by PINNELL & BAX, all you need to do is ensure the completed entry form for Buton Week and accompanying cheque are returned to Janet before the end of February for inclusion in a draw to be made at the Dinghy Show.

Entry forms should be hitting the doormats this week.

Watch this space for more exciting Burton Week offers or visit the website at www.burtonweek.org on a regular basis to see what is new.

Are now posted on the Gill section of this web-site. Congratulations to Graham Camm & Zoe Ballantyne for retaining "their" trophy, to Gerald & Nick / Antony for carrying off the Admiral's Cup division and to Steve & Joanne Sallis for taking the Family section.

There were 95 different helms who entered with various crews this year.

Congratulations to Steve Norbury for winning the Commodore's Cup.;D

Obviously he had some help, but Steve sailed on board Quokka, part of the victorious GBR Red team.:)

Now his excuse has run out, he should get back into a proper boat so we can all thrash him!!:o

This Saturday I will be making the journey up to Northampton for one of my favourite events of the year, The Steve Nicholson Memorial Trophy, and it is all in a good cause as every penny of the entry fees go to the charity Asthma UK with the prizes being donated by Pinell & Bax, amongst others. It will also be only the fourth time the (nearly!) new boat hits the water and, judging by the forecast the first opportunity for Jane to acquaint herself with the windward deck.

Two races, with the first starting at 11.00 and spring like conditions expected. Anyone else going?
