Yeadon SC will host their annual N12 open meeting on Sunday 6 October and, like our friends at Ripon,we are hoping for another great day of racing with a good turnout of boats.
So if you are planning on coming to Ripon on the Saturday, please do come and join us on the Sunday and make it a full-weekend of sailing.
Briefing will be at 11.00am with first start 11.30am followed by lunch and two races in the afternoon.
To help with catering please indicate below if you'll be coming.
We look forward to welcoming you back after last year's event was cancelled due to blue-green algae.
The barley straw seems to have kept the water clear of it this season.

I have just heard from Brian Herring that the first race at Redesmere N12 Open this Sunday will start at 10.30am
Presumably there will be a briefing at 10'ish
The Club is planning two races before lunch and one after, so should finish reasonably early.
Any takers - besides BH and myself...?

The things they get up to at Aldeburgh YC on a cold Sunday morning in December!
See below for pic of John Chalker and his son Tom in their Baggy Trousers 'Red Herring' N3434 taking on the might of Peter Wilson (one time N12 sailor) and his crew on board his 8 Metre rule yacht 'If' during the penultimate AYC Winter Handicap Series race yesterday. Awesome.

There can't be many venues running handicap racing with this range of boats.
Well done to John and Tom for getting out there and sticking it out for nearly two hours in the bitter cold.

As part of the 75th Anniversary celebrations at Northampton next year we are looking to get as many ribbed 12's on the water as we can.
At the moment it looks like N1 may be available (and N2 if her restoration can be finished in time).  I plan to bring N341 plus 3 others (N493, N711 and N1083) if crews can be found to sail in them.
John Chalker (Bobtail) and Jonathan Reubin (Cygnet) are other possibles and Brian Herring hopes to have his Uffa King completed by next May.
I wonder if N153 'Witch' will also be making an appearance?

Would all owners of these older designs please indicate whether or not they will be able to attend.
Also - if you would like the chance to sail a 'ribby' but haven't got one of your own please indicate below.
All other Vintage designs will, of course, be most welcome.
Best wishes

As part of a project for my boatbuilding  course, I am trying to track down a set of original plans and offset tables for an Uffa King (Uffa Fox's design for the 1st National 12).
Our Association Officers do not know of any and Yachting World, who originally issued them, no longer have a copy in their archive.

If anyone knows of the whereabouts of a set of these plans please could you let me know.
Thanks

It would be good to hear any feedback from those who attended this year's Burton.  The vibes were all positive at the Burton Dinner and the Prizegiving on the Tuesday afternoon, but if anyone has any specific comment to make please post them here... all with a view to improve the event for participants going forward.

I have already received some really useful reflections from Team Spinnaker which I include below, which partly echoes other discussions I had during the event regarding the Crew's Race and Crew's Union activity - both of which have proved difficult to accommodate within the four-day format - but we'll keep trying!

Look forward to hearing from you and thanks for coming.
Tim
pp Burton Committee

Here are some of the comments from Team Spinnaker:

Is it possible to arrange any more activities for the younger members of crew, as
youngsters between 10 to 15 years can find it hard to mix, particularly in the
evenings where most of the adults are chatting over a drink. Any sort of
activity, such as table tennis, table football, pool, or football, etc may help
to get this age group to mix. It may also already be too tight a schedule in
the 4 days (3 nights) but this could help this age group chat to others.

Would it be possible to spread some of the prizes further down the fleet, this could be
particularly appropriate to the youth fleet where it would be good to
recognise/encourage more, say the first 3, again this is to give encouragement
to the future of the class and possibly the first 3 admiral cup boats could be
rewarded? We have no experience of other class championships and these may have
been tried and discounted previously.

In terms of takeaways, would it be possible to provide all youth participants with some
form of medal or souvenir that they could take away â€" other sporting
events often have a small medal or cup, that is given for participation and
this might be appreciated by the younger members that they could take back home
to show their mum, grand parents, or to their local sailing clubs as it is some
form of achievement to compete in Burton week. I appreciate that this would
cost slightly more (unless its possible to reduce the glass ware to one per
winning boat?) but think that it would help retain the crews interest in the
class to come back in the following year (for another competitors medal,
t-shirt, etc.)  It would also be great if it could be something that is
useful - for example, some form of label that can be used to identify the
sailing kit bags (some of the GBR sailors bags had labels from events that they
had attended) or maybe an event t-shirt.

Sara Lloyd is our contact at Castle Cove SC and she will try and provide local crews for any helms needing one for the Burton.

Please email her on "Lloyd, Sara" <sara@spinahse.force9.net> or call her on 01305 787222 to let her know if you are in need and take it from there.

Her Club gets going in early April so she will put a post on the Notice Boards and on their website to see who is interested and could be available.

If there are any offers from existing 12 crews?? .... please add a response to this post.

Cheers

Burton Dinner - don't miss out.

We can accommodate 150 max for the Burton Dinner at WPNSA and already 101 tickets have been sold.

If you are thinking of attending the Burton Event and would like tickets for the Dinner it would be advisable to get your entry and dinner request in soon in order to avoid disappointment.

Brian Herring has kindly gifted me an old IYE rudder stock so I can fit a lifting rudder to Tigress 3130.  However, these originally came with a bespoke tiller which slid into the extrusion on the top of the stock. See photos.  Just wondered if anyone out there still has one of these tillers that they are no longer using tucked away in an attic or garage?  Happy to pay something for it.  Perhaps we can do the deal at the Dinghy Show next weekend?
The stock also has a sliding white plastic roller built in near the top pintle - can anyone enlighten me as to what this is used for?  Does it slide down into a cut-out in the rudder head to hold the rudder blade up  ... or down?  Or does it serve some other purpose like acting as a sheave to reduce friction on the rudder downhaul line as it passes out of the stock and along the underside of the tiller?
Hope someone out there can help ?!
Entries are looking very healthy for Burton Week. Free jib draw will be made at the Boat Show!  Good luck if you are an early entry.

Here's an Early Warning and an opportunity for all - at the AGM on 1st June at WPNSA - the last morning of the Burton event, we will be appointing the Committee to run the NTOA until the following AGM in 2011.  There will be three general committee vacancies to fill due to members reaching the end of their allotted time.
I'd be very pleased to hear from members who'd like a chance to give something back to the Class and help support the running the Association's activities.  For example, we are likely to be looking for someone to organise the 2011 Dinghy Show stand in what will be our 75th Anniversary year - so something special will be required.  You can either express interest with a database post or drop me an email if you'd prefer, or give me a call if you need to talk it over.  Meetings are usually held once a quarter - leaving you 361 days on which to do other things!
I look forward to hearing from you.
Best wishes
Tim (current NTOA Chairman ...until current Vice Chair -Howard Chadwick, takes over in June.)

This Discussion Forum is not usually used to advertise products but I hope an exception can be made in this instance...

I have just received a note from the Chairman of the Eric Twiname Trust - Bruce Aitken - about the excellent work of the Trust in supporting youth sailing and racing and the re-publication of Twiname's superb book on dinghy sailing - 'Start to Win'.

If any of you have not yet had a chance to read this book then do so now - it has been out of print for 20 years but I can thoroughly recommend it and the new 3rd edition has been brought right up to date with all the current rules.

It's available online or I'm sure there will be copies available on the Adlard Coles stand at the Dinghy Exhibition.  All royalties from the sale of the book go to support the work of the Trust.  Thanks. Tim

Here's the note:

The Eric Twiname Memorial Trust and 'Start to  Win'

Early last  year the Eric Twiname Memorial Trust was  generously assigned the author's copyright of 'Start to  Win', written by Eric  Twiname in 1973. Out of print for over  20 years, Adlard Coles (now Adlard Coles Nautical, part  of A & C Black Publishers) have recently republished this classic -  now in its 3rd Edition and substantially re-designed, with a Foreward by Ben Ainslie and  an updated Rules section by Bryan  Willis to accord with the 2009-2012 ISAF  Rules.

Despite the  passage of time 'Start to  Win' has undoubtedly retained its position as  the book on simple racing principles, written as it was  specifically for the benefit of the ordinary dinghy sailor. As such it manages  to remove much of the mystique of racing sailing and assists  helmsmen to improve their skills and tactical ability. There is arguably nothing else that sets out the  techniques of sailing in such a clear, understandable and straightforward  manner. 'Start to Win' has been welcomed back by its many  followers, and will no doubt be read for the first time by many more. This classic, which  complements 'The Rules Book'  also written by Eric  Twiname and revised by Bryan Willis for the 2009-2012 rules, is set to  help sailors achieve their racing best for many years to  come.

Royalties from 'Start  to Win' go to the Eric Twiname Memorial Trust, which was set up in  1980 in order to perpetuate Eric’s memory and to enable his  many and diverse sailing interests to continue. It became a registered charity  in 1991 with the primary objective of providing funding or equipment that will assist those in full-time education at schools and  universities in the United Kingdom to sail or yacht race, with the emphasis being directed towards youth. Purchase of this book will  therefore assist the Trust with its invaluable support for youth racing  sailing, which includes bursaries for juniors  on starter courses, the on-going provision of support RIBS for all nine national youth classes, the funding of  dinghies for training purposes for sailing associations and clubs, and the  financing of national championship events. For further information please visit our website www.erictwinametrust.org.

It would be very much appreciated if you  could bring this e-mail to the attention of your members via your  website. 'Start to Win' is  available from Adlard Coles Nautical (discount price £15.29) and through  most nautical booksellers, as well as  Amazon.

Kind  regards,

Bruce  Aitken

General National 12 chat / Tuning a 12
04 Mar 2010, 12:57
With the family re-united for Christmas and space in the front room required for the traditional Christmas tree,
my workshop has been rocking to a new vibe.
Will my Tigress currently in for some repair and restoration get in the drum and bass groove?
Will I get my crew back if he makes it big? It's all to play for in 2010. Tim

Battle of the Classes Pursuit Race ... our invitation came through today

This invitational race is part of the London Boat Show.  We are invited to send along two boats.  Meads did it last year (the only 12), and Antony Gifford, Frances Gifford, and Graham Camm have done it in the past.  There probably is a little bit of kudos in winning it (Antony and Fran did a couple of years ago) but this is tempered by people complaining about the handicap!  It would be good if we could get a couple of leading boats to do it.  Any volunteers?

If you would like to represent the Class please express interest via this post or give Meads or myself a call. Thanks. Tim

"Please find enclosed the Notice of Race, entry form and PR concerning the annual Battle of the Classes Pursuit Race, to be held on Sunday 17th January on the Royal Victoria Dock at Excel.

British Sailing, the organisers of the event and sponsors, very much hope that you will support the event again and send along two crews to represent your class in this prestigious event. Please check with your Class Association Secretary as to who your nominated crews will be before you send off the entry form the the Secretary at the RBYC.
We are limited to around 50 boats on the water so please get your entry in asap to confirm your place.

Best regards
John Heyes "
