Title: 101 things to do with a broken tiller extension
Post by: Jeremy C on 22 Jul 2010, 03:39
Thought I'd take an old tiller extension bend the end and drill a couple of holes in it and strap camera to one end and boat to the other, then go out with George and 66 other boats for Wednesday evening racing!

Sorry about the bad music, got bored trying to look for songs and gave up!

Meds,

Fujifilm Z33 WP (waterproof to 3m) was about £130 but have just seen them for around £80 using google search. Got mine from john Lewis down the road.
10 mpixel camera(but its not as good as it sounds!- just a standard compact quality image really) plus does about 35mins of 640x480 video on a 2mb memory card (SD)
Great little camera and light so easy to strap on the end of an old tiller.

did this one with it strapping the camera to tacktick mount in our europe... far less wobble..

If you want to go for a better image then I have been coveting the GoPro HD hero. Do a google search and see the fantastic quality it produces.. next on my wish list! But is quite a bit more expensive.
The surf version has a 170 degree field of view so you should be able to get some great (if distorted shots with it!)

I take it the Bubblemen were off sailing elsewhere or were they pillow fighting in the club?

Tried out an even bigger pole, out of the back of the stern quarter this time. Too much time on a Saturday obviously!

Video coming shortly once I have edited out all of my mistakes (quite a few as I was single handed-George had gone garden centering!)

Image below gives the view I managed to achieve with a 2m boom out the back of the boat.

Wind wasn't quite as exciting this time...

'ere it is:

Gets a bit bouncier than the other camera position as the boom is so long. Technical problems to solve.......

Great stuff Jeremy! That last test with the 2m pole off the transom is a great view. Just the right distance to get a great feel for the speed and manouvers and see what's going on.

More fun with the pole cam.Two up this time Last nights racing in gusty horrible northerly.. really need to sort out a way to stiffen it up and stop it bouncing so much.
If anyone would like to come to Burghfield it would be great to get this mounted on another boat and do some two + boat sailing .... would especially like to see it mounted on a t-foil boat (meds.. Graham... Steve) so that we can have a look at the wake. Would like to ry and put together some footage for use at next years dinghy show to help advertise the class.

Contact me if you are intersted ad we'll see if we can find a date in the diary....

Nice video, inspired me to strap a camera to my boat for Wednesday racing.  The camera angle wasn't so great, but it did capture a broken toestrap moment...

Great.... Bring on more people trying out cameras on their boats! The more the merrier.

Video of last wednesday two handed sailing in F2-4 now uploaded.. Apologies again for bad taste in music and shaky camera.. I edited out the worst bits
Particularly like the bit when an upset swan rapidly swims across our bows!
Ignore the horizon... however much I try I can't mount the camera level with it (compound angles and all that) and you can't exactly change it on the water!
