Redesmere open meeting

22nd August 2010

9 National 12s arrived at Redesmere Sailing Club to take on the tricky light wind challenge the third venue in the Midland Area’s ‘Rivers and Ponds’ series presented.

The first race saw tight racing throughout the fleet. At the front, Chris Day (N3513) got off to a promising start only to be quickly caught by Jon Whitehead (3473) Gareth Williams (N3496) and Tom White (N2765). The four battled it out for the lead for the rest of the race, with Tom and Maria winning it on the line, following by Gareth and Jen in 2nd with Jon and Heidi taking 3rd. Behind the front group Brian Herring’s 52 year old 4A took the honours in the vintage fleet.

The fluky winds continued for the second race where Tom White and Chris Day broke free from the rest of the fleet. The continuous switching of first place reflected the testing conditions and a final tacking frenzy down the final leg of the race saw Tom and Maria cross the finishing line first. Jon Whitehead came through solidly in third and Brian Herring took on the newer boats finishing 5th and ensuring he would take home the infamous vintage paddle!

The winds briefly picked up for the start of the third race with Chris Day using this to his advantage to escape from the rest of the fleet. Tom White and Gareth Williams made up the chasing group. The increased wind pressure was short lived and as the winds died once more, Tom broke free of Gareth, his China Doll slowly creeping up on Chris’ Feeling Foolish, and John Cheetham put in a bid for third place taking on Gareth in a battle of the Numinouses. In the end Chris Day held on to the lead, with Tom in second and Gareth successfully defended his third place.

We are now looking forward to the final weekend of the Midland area at Olton Mere and Trent Valley 11th-12th September.
