About the design
Designed by Martin Jones (hence the name), the design was a progression
on Patrick Pym and Martin Jones's successful Lucky Number design,
flaring out to a maximum beam of approx. 6'3" combined with
a fine entry, narrow transom and relatively flat rocker. Not
wide by today's standards, but when you consider that the majority
of the boats were about 5'6" wide with lots of rocker, you
can realise the step forward that was happening. The design had
a reputation for being difficult to sail, with the helm regularly
being washed out the back on a fast plane by the stern wave!
In truth the design wasn't as difficult as its reputation and
was before its time. At the 1968 Burton Hugh Welbourn and Martin
Challis sailing Mr Jones (N2399) swept all before them in winning
every race bar one ( There used to be a photo of Hugh & Martin
collecting their goodies in a wheel barrow at the Falmouth prize
giving.)
